Hello,
I began teaching in 1999 after receiving my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. In 2001 I moved and began working on the south side of Chicago for Chicago Public Schools. For 5 years I taught at Hamline Elementary in the Back of the Yards Neighborhood, and for the last 4 years I have work at Richard Edwards Elementary in the Archer Heights neighborhood teaching special education.
In 2006 I received my Master of the Arts degree in Special Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and in 2009 I received my Master of the Arts in Educational Leadership from Concordia University at Chicago. I am continuing to look for new ways to improve the education for our students, especially those that struggle with the standard general education curriculum. This web site has been one way to help disseminate information to teachers about several topics, but especially Response to Intervention (RtI).
Since I began coordinating RtI in 2007 it has become apparent that the new emphasis this process places on research-based curriculum and assessment creates real results. While the implementation of RtI is difficult and requires a lot of hard work, its reward in student achievement is well worth the effort. Most importantly, it truly does prevent students from "falling through the cracks."
